Wreath Emergency

Last year we were scrambling to get all the boxes and bags and decoration wrapping cleaned up – and I admit – shoved back into the closet unorganized – as some friends were coming for dinner.

After everything was tucked away, I realized that we had three very pretty, but really plain green wreaths.  The only thing left out was wrapping supplies, and when I opened the box – to my surprise I found about 50 6″ pieces of random holiday ribbon.  I don’t know why they were there, if in this long forgotten box I had stashed these dozens of book marks? Cinnamon stick ties? Reminders for my finger? I have no idea why I had so many, so short pieces of ribbon.

But – they soon were added to my wreaths on the door, and over the fireplace for a very simple, casual solution to my naked greens. One easy knot on each, and there we are.  A simple, easy, fun solution.

Holiday Stress Relief

These little popper fellows found a home in our Christmas box a few years ago and after wondering what to do with them, I now place them out on display with a little bowl of balls – for those moments when I just need a stress release.  Also handy for entertaining cats, and making children scream at their siblings.

I like keeping silly little holiday themed toys the kids have received over the year and finding ways to use them.  They always bring a sparkle of delight to the kids as we pull open the Christmas box of goodies and remember past holidays.

Oldies but Goodies: Silver

During the holidays, I love to get out the hand me downs, one of my favorites being the boxes of silverware collected randomly from relatives.  I don’t really have a full set of anything, but I have enough of a few sets to make a fun festive table.  And I have a lot of serving silver which I think are so fancy and fun.

Thanksgiving Serving Pieces above

I have several funny little pieces that no longer are necessary today – but one of them I completely love.  It may be intended for something else but use it as a meat fork in a buffet style.  It has two prongs, and a plunger, so when you stab your piece of meat and lift it to your tray, you can single-handedly release the slice of turkey or roast beef on to your plate by pressing the plunger. It is just genius in its simplicity of operation, especially when you are holding your plate in one hand and maybe carrying a wine glass as well.

I don’t find them new anywhere, but if you see one of these gems in a thrift or antique shop, pick it up. It will help you serve up a little slice of holiday heaven.
